Las Vegas Area Destinations: Red Rock Canyon
It is a place to escape would be a perfect day for the next vacation to Las Vegas, Nevada. Spend day or the morning and be back to enjoy the entertainment center in the afternoon.
Located about 20 miles west of downtown Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is the ideal trip for a holiday in Las Vegas. Red Rock Canyon is a scenic loop drive through scenic parts of the canyon, kilometers of trails for beginners and experienced veterans, a wide range of possibilities of climbing and many other attractions for the whole family.
Scenic Drive is approximately 13 miles long and pullouts and parking at all major attractions. Picnic areas are just off the asphalt pavement. This is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings without a lot of physical effort.
There are 22 routes listed in the area. My choice is a Calico Hills and Lost Creek Children's Discovery Trail.
Calico Hills is an easy trail high base fossilized sand dunes, which include the Calico Hills. I can not correct to think of adjectives to describe the views along the route. Brilliant red dye mixed with the traditional sandstone rising above you. Green vegetation along the bottom and suspended along the slopes and ravines. This is not a steep trail, except for trips to and from parking lots.
The Lost Children's Discovery Creek Trail is a one-mile hike, and is easy enough for everyone. I take my son (3 years) on this one. The trail crosses the dry wash and then use climbs the stairs of the hill. The trail passes ancient agave roasting pit used by the indigenous inhabitants long ago. Interpretation of the characters describe some of the things that I found in the excavations. Another area that we pass a camping area used seasonally by local residents. There are several natural overhangs and a few boulders, which provide shade for a short break. It is transmitted to the springs, which are reclaimed and back to the parking area.
Lost Creek also has a picnic area that is perfect for lunch after the tour. Picnic area located at the end of the pavement and has several areas that can be tested. This is a very popular place and try to get there early or just be patient and wait for a table.
Rock climbing permits are available at the BLM office. You can visit their website to get the emergency number. You must call in advance to get permission. Climbing the sandstone slopes is not allowed for 24 hours after a rain storm. Calico Hills area is very popular among climbers. It's amazing to watch someone start their climb, and eventually become just a colored dot high above you.
But Sandstone is plenty of climbing opportunities in the limestone rocks found throughout the Red Rock Canyon and throughout the Las Vegas area. Caution and the appropriate equipment at all times while climbing. Remember, we want to enjoy this area year after year.
Best time of year to visit Red Rock Canyon is in the spring, winter and autumn. However, if you have an early start can be visited in the summer months. With daily reaching at or above 100 degrees you will want to carefully plan to visit. Bring plenty of water any time of year.
Please note that the damage that it does not to this area can not be undone. This is truly a treasure for all to enjoy and should not be in as good condition as when you arrived. Use of waste and respect the natural and native areas throughout.
