When you are buying a guitar you should do your research. As a beginning guitar player is easy to get confused with all the information and suggestion that is available. There are many places where you can find information and you should check all them. Guitar magazines are a good place to find prices and reviews of different models of guitars. You can also get information at your local music store.
Another great tool is the Internet - you can get information on manufacturers, seeking to assess other guitarist and the views and find the best prices online.
Remember that a lot of information and views that you will find will be biased. A salesman at a music store wants to buy the brand of guitar that he sells, so make sure you read reviews and opinions from independent sources.
I am often asked about buying a guitar with an online auction site eBay. You can find auctions where guitars sell for incredibly low prices, but I suggest you buy this way, because you really should play a guitar before you buy it, especially at this stage in your musical career.
Once have background knowledge that you need, you should make a selection of guitars that you are attracted to it and to establish a fund for yourself. Then stick to your budget! Do not let salespeople talk you into losing more money than proposed.
Trying guitars you can choose be intimidating for beginners. It is important to remember that you are not in a guitar shop to show everyone how great a guitar player you are - you're there to determine if the guitar on your list is right for you.
One of the most important things about a guitar is how it "feels" when you play it. There are also mechanical things to check. Check the frets for buzzing by playing each. Make sure the neck is not warped by looking below it as if sighting a gun. Check that all the volume and tone controls work.
It is also a good thought to take an experienced guitarist along with you when you are looking at guitars. Not only will they be able to offer useful advice, they will be good moral support when it's time to pick up the guitar and perform it in public.
